Clyde Hurst Obituary

Clyde Joseph Hurst, 75, of Idaho Falls, passed away Sunday, March 30, 2014, at his home.

He was born June 27, 1938, in Helper, Utah, to Louisa Potter Hurst and Robert John Hurst. He grew up in Helper and spent hours climbing in the nearby mountains. He also played trumpet in the high school and college bands in Price, Utah.

Clyde served two years in the Gulf States Mission and then completed B.S. and M.S. degrees at Utah State University.

During his time in Logan, he met the love of his life, Julia Croft, who was teaching school there. They were married in the Logan LDS Temple on Dec. 22, 1965, and then lived in St. Paul, Minn., where Clyde was working on his Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota. It was here that their two sons, Jestin and John, were born.

Clyde worked for the National Park Service for several years as a plant scientist and the family lived in Washington, D.C.; Picayune, Miss.; and Logan, Utah. He then became an Agricultural Extension Agent with Utah State University and in 1985, the family moved to Richfield, Utah. In 2008, he and Julia moved to Idaho Falls.

He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many different callings. He enjoyed traveling with his family and visited all 50 states and many countries. He especially enjoyed driving to Alaska.

Clyde is survived by his wife, Julia Croft Hurst; his sons, Jestin (Marci) Hurst of Idaho Falls and John (Nick) Hurst of Salt Lake City; his sister, Joy (Russell) Mickelson of Las Vegas; and his brother, Robert (Janet) Hurst of Salt Lake City. He also leaves three beloved grandchildren, Tyler, Derek and Megan.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 5, at Wood Funeral Home East Side, 963 S. Ammon Road, with Bishop Kelly Mallard of the Idaho LDS Falls Sage Creek Ward officiating. The family will visit with friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Saturday prior to services, both times at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fielding Memorial Park.

Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.woodfuneralhome.com.
