Alonso Martinez, 24, passed away Monday, May 19, 2014, due to a canoeing accident.

He was born to Salomon Martinez and Maria Dolores Barrientos Aug. 12, 1989, at Fresno, Calif. He graduated from Clark County High School in 2007. Alonso was wed from July 2009 to January 2014. Alonso was living in Crosby, N.D., from 2012 to present. He was employed by a private contractor based out of North Dakota. He was a member of the St. John Paul II Catholic Community.

His hobbies and interests were camping, hiking, socializing, cooking, dancing and pumping iron. Alonso was an adventurous and charismatic soul; he always put others before himself, could light up a room with his smile, was family-oriented, gave the best bear hugs known to man, and was loved by all -- young and old.

Survivors include his father, Salomon Martinez and his mother, Maria Dolores Martinez, both of Dubois; sister, Maria J. Serrano and spouse, Camilo Serrano Jr. and Edith Martinez, Judith Martinez and Patricia Martinez, all of Dubois, Melissa Hernandez and spouse, David Hernandez of Idaho Falls, and Beatriz A. Lopez and spouse, Adrian Lopez of Kuna; brother, Fernando Martinez and spouse, Sylvanna Martinez of San Diego, Calif.; and nephews: Dominique, Alondra and Benjamin Serrano; Oliver Lopez; Noah Hernandez; and Nicholas Maldonado.

Alonso was preceded in death by his fraternal grandfather, Felimon Martinez and maternal grandfather, Juan Barrientos.

A funeral mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 657 N. 2871 East in Roberts, with Father Raul Covarrubias as celebrant. Burial will follow in Dubois Cemetery. A Rosary will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a viewing from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Buck-Miller-Hann Funeral Home, 825 E. 17th St. in Idaho Falls. The family suggests memorial donations be made to The Martinez Family.
