Rita Marjorie Watson Bates passed away in her sleep Saturday, June 21, 2014.
Marjorie went to schools in Idaho Falls and graduated from Madison High School in Rexburg. She attended school at Ricks College and the University of Utah, and obtained a bachelor's degree in English from Brigham Young University.
She worked for the Salt Lake ammunitions depot during World War II, and at INEL and the Church Office Building in Salt Lake City. She was an English teacher at Ricks College and a secretary at both Madison High School and Ricks College, from which she retired before serving a mission with her husband.
She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served a mission for the Church in the Western States Mission. She and her husband later served a mission in the Dallas Temple. She served in various capacities in the Sunday school, Primary, Relief Society and Young Women organizations. She also served as an ordinance worker in the Idaho Falls Temple and by her husband's side as assistant to the stake patriarch.
She loved literature and teaching principles of writing to her children. She also loved old movies, plays, symphonies and entertainment events at Ricks College.
She was preceded in death by her parents, five siblings and her husband, Orrin Bates.
She is survived by three sisters, Martha Cook, Derena Tew and Lucille Watson. She has five children, Kendall Bates, Rita (Dale) Bills, Byron (Leta) Bates, Marlon (Julie) Bates and Gregory (Angela) Bates. She also left 30 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
Her family has been blessed by her love for and devotion to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Her legacy is one of love.
Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, June 28, at the Lyman 1st Ward LDS Chapel. The family will receive friends from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg and from 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Saturday prior to services at the church. Interment will be in Bates Cemetery.
