Sylvia Straub Obituary

Sylvia Merrill Straub, 80, passed away peacefully Monday, July 14, 2014, in her Idaho Falls home.

Sylvia was born April 8, 1934, in Safford, Ariz., to Joseph Dauntforth Merrill and Bessie Lucille Alder Merrill. Her early life was one of both joys and sorrows, but she shared many happy times in Safford with her three sisters and extended family. Sylvia graduated from Safford High School in Arizona. She spent a year at Eastern Arizona Jr. College before attending Brigham Young University, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in education.

Sylvia married Robert Harold Straub on August 14, 1959, in Gauciel, France. They were later sealed with their family in the Los Angeles LDS Temple on April 10, 1969.

Sylvia joined Robert in his military career, where they first lived in Evreux, France. They later lived in California, New Mexico, Germany and Michigan, before moving to and settling down in Idaho Falls. Later, after a 10-year stay in Arizona to spend time with family, they returned to Idaho Falls for good. Along the way, Sylvia and Bob raised three children: Kristy, Kurt and Kara.

For over 30 years, Sylvia enjoyed a career as an elementary school teacher. She loved teaching and knew from a young age that she wanted to be a teacher. She always challenged her students to push themselves and to do their very best.

Because of her great love of family, Sylvia devoted much of her time to family history work. She left a wealth of information and fascinating stories about her ancestors that will continue to inspire her children, grandchildren and their children.

An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she loved serving in Primary. She served two missions with Bob at the LDS Bishop's Storehouse in Idaho Falls. She loved reading and traveling and could never resist a good crossword puzzle.

Sylvia is survived by her husband, Robert Harold "Bob" Straub of Idaho Falls; daughter, Kristy (Darrell) Robb of Idaho Falls; son, Kurt (Cheryll) Straub of Brigham City, Utah; and daughter, Kara Straub of Holladay, Utah. She is also survived by all three of her sisters, Marjorie Bowen of Tucson, Ariz., Phyllis Agee of Buckeye, Ariz., and Jae Dee (Monte) Chamberlain of Kanab, Utah. She also doted on her four grandchildren and three (soon to be five) great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 19, at Wood Funeral Home East Side, 963 S. Ammon Road. The family will visit with friends from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Ammon Cemetery with graveside services.

Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.woodfuneralhome.com.
