Larry Dean Prescott, 56, passed away unexpectedly while hiking in the Lemhi Range on Oct. 29, 2016.
He was born Jan. 29, 1960, in Pocatello, Idaho, to Albert Hansen Prescott and Donna Lee Sant. Larry was raised in Pocatello, where he attended local schools. As a young boy, he was interested in fishing, exploring, rock hunting and playing baseball. He also had a great love of art at an early age. Larry graduated from Highland High School with high honors in 1978. He worked a variety of jobs during his high school years. Larry especially enjoyed working at the Sandpiper Restaurant with several of his best friends, making money and memories.
Larry served an LDS Spanish-speaking mission in San Antonio, Texas. During the latter part of his mission, he was asked to help open a new Spanish-speaking mission in Orlando, Fla. He loved working with the influx of Cuban people there.
Upon returning from his mission, Larry began working at Blocks Department Store in Pocatello. He also attended Idaho State University. In the spring of 1981, he met his sweetheart, Nancy Vander Kooi. They were married June 3, 1982, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Larry received a Bachelor of Art in art in 1985 and in 1988, a Bachelor of Art in education from Idaho State University. He taught sixth grade at Indian Hills Elementary in Pocatello from 1988-1990. Embarking on a great adventure, Larry and Nancy taught in Okinawa, Japan, for the Department of Defense Dependents Schools from 1990-1995. During this time, Larry and Nancy had the great opportunity to travel extensively in Asia, along with meeting and teaching with people from all over the world.
During their last year in Japan, their sweet daughter, Katherine, was born. Wanting to be closer to family with their new baby, they returned to live in Idaho. Larry began teaching at Madison Middle School in Rexburg. He taught history, math and art. During these years, Larry and Nancy were blessed with two more beautiful children, a daughter, Jessica, and a son, Benjamin.
In 2007, Larry received a Master of Education with an emphasis on art education from the University of Idaho and also began teaching art at Madison High School, where he created the Madison Photography Program. Throughout Larry's teaching career, he received many awards, including the prestigious Thomas C. Wright Fellowship and the Madison Education Foundation's Excellence in Education Teaching Award.
Larry was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He held many callings throughout the years. Larry was currently serving as a teacher's quorum advisor, a Scouting Committee member and a home teacher.
Larry is survived by his wife, Nancy, and their three children, Katherine, Jessica and Benjamin, of Rexburg; his mother, Donna of Pocatello; and three brothers, David of Idaho Falls, Rick of Boise and Jon of Pocatello. He was preceded in death by his father, Albert.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, at Rexburg North Stake Center, 314 E. Second N. The family will receive friends from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. today at Flamm Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment will be in Sugar City Cemetery. Mr Prescott was my 6th grade teacher and by far, the best teacher ever. I still compare him to my daughters' teachers. He taught me to love all art, including the art inside me.

We were so saddened and shocked to hear about Larry. He was way too young, but what a fine man. I enjoyed so much getting to know the entire family as I taught each terrific child. I enjoyed working with Larry at the Middle School, still enjoy his well-designed flower bed in front of the school. I heard nothing but raves from his students, especially in his photography class. Richard so enjoyed getting to know all of you in the dental office. We are out of town babysitting, but we want you to know you are in our prayers and we pray you will find comfort in God's plan. We were lucky to know Larry. ♡♡♡

John Muir wrote. "Oh these vast, calm, measureless mountain days, days in whose light everything seems equally divine, opening a thousand windows to show us God". Larry was one who truly was able to look through those windows.
