Howard Edward Frederiksen Obituary

Howard Edward Frederiksen, 88, of Kilgore, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013, from a stroke at Renown Medical Center in Reno, Nev.

He and his identical twin brother, Horace, were born Aug. 31, 1924, to Ed and Virginia McGovern Frederiksen in the family house in Kilgore. The twins graduated from Spencer High School in 1942. Until Horace's death in December 2009, the only time the twins were apart was during WWII, when Horace was drafted into the army, and Howard stayed to run the family ranch.

On Oct. 25, 1946, Howard married Josephine Lawson in Spencer, Idaho. They lived in Kilgore on the family ranch. Joy passed away in July 2000. There were four children born to this union: William of Dubois, twins Kevin (Joann) deceased, and Kristine (Cecil) Guillory of Lovington, N.M., and Janice (Mike) Zielinski of Winnemucca, Nev.

Howard was especially proud to be a charter member of the Clark County Soil Conservation District in 1956. He served on the district board for 40 years. Through the contacts he developed in SCS, the district was able to help fund a number of conservation projects, including several livestock water pipelines.

Howard was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, and also belonged to the Scottish Rite. He was a member of the Order of Eastern Star. He spent a year traveling the state visiting lodges with his nephew, Joe Alexander, when Joe was Grand Master of Masons in Idaho, and Howard was Grand Tyler.

Howard took pride in being a lifelong resident of Kilgore, only leaving for the winter months after his semi-retirement from ranching. He continued to be involved in the management of the family ranch until his death. He and Horace spent many summers building and repairing fences on the Kilgore ranch. They also liked to help put up hay and take care of the livestock.

Family was important to Howard, and he took every chance to visit his sisters and brothers. He liked to go to family reunions and Thanksgiving dinners with family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, William and Horace; sisters, Margaret (Pete) Taylor, Harriet (Ward) Alexander and Edna (Bill) Thomas; and son, Kevin.

He is survived by his brother, Kenneth (Nancy) of Nampa; his son, William; daughters, Janice and Kristine; three grandchildren, Meghan Zielinski Foos, Spencer Zielinski and Leslie Frederiksen Harvey; and two great-grandchildren.

There will be a memorial gathering in mid-June in Dubois. The family wishes to extend an invitation to friends and neighbors to attend. Graveside services will follow the memorial at Kilgore No. 2 Cemetery.
