Donna Douglass Obituary

Donna Ruth Larsen Douglass, 83, of Idaho Falls, passed away Monday, April 8, 2013, at her home following an extended illness. She was under the care of OneSource Hospice. The family would like to give a special thanks to OneSource Hospice and caregivers Tammy, Megan, Meredith and Mandy She was born June 18, 1929, at Mrs. Burton's, a local midwives residence in Driggs, to Alfred Levoy Larsen and Sarah Naomi Sorenson Larsen. She grew up on the farm in the small community of Darby, Idaho, and went to school in the first and second grade in a two-room school house in Darby. From third grade on, she went to school there and started working as a theater usher.

In the seventh grade when she started high school, she moved with her parents and sister to Driggs, where they bought a home. After graduation she went to Ricks College and earned an associate degree in education, then finished her education at BYU through extensive courses and summer school. She taught school for six years in Driggs and Tetonia.

Donna worked as an usher in the local movie theater and taught school until she was married to Elden Wayne Douglass on June 20, 1952, in Driggs. They lived in Tetonia, where she taught the fifth grade for a year until they moved to Driggs and they farmed and she taught school for three years.

They moved to Idaho Falls in 1957, where they eventually bought a home. They also purchased the art department in the Hobbs Jr. High School until retirement in 1990.

Donna and Wayne were not fortunate to have any children of their own but had many nieces and nephews to love and to help them in their older years. Her main enjoyment during her married years were her little dogs.

After her husband passed away September 10, 2005, her nieces and nephews checked on her every day and brought her meals. A special thanks to Tamara Waters, Bronka and Eugene Hansen and Peggy Phillipp for her special care and love.

Donna was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served as a teacher, Young Women's President, instructor and advisor for the young women's camps, and in the summer she was the softball coach for the girls.

Donna had many interests in her life. Along with being an art instructor in the Shelley School District for 32 years, she was an avid collector on antique button hooks, of which she had over 300. She spent a lot of time with Wayne digging, searching and collecting antique bottles. Donna loved to read, cross-stitch, needlepoint, oil painting and crocheting.

Survivors include her brother, Daniel Larsen of Pleasantor, California; brother-in-law, Allen Douglass of Wenatchee, Washington; sister-in-law, Bonnie Swanson of Wenatchee, Washington; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; infant brother, Lawrance; and sister, Roberta Cordon.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at Wood Funeral Home, 273 N. Ridge Ave. The family will visit with friends from 1 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. prior to services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Darby Cemetery in Driggs.

Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.woodfuneralhome.com.
