Lt. Colonel David A. Boeshore, 87, of Fleetwood, died Thursday morning, April 25, 2013, of natural causes in his residence.
He was the husband of Mary J. Alexander Boeshore, they were married on June 20, 1970 in Tobyhanna, PA.
Born Nov. 11, 1925, in Tuckerton the son of the late Joseph Boeshore and Dorothy Tecklenburg Boeshore.
Growing up, Dave had a big interest in music and took lessons for 7 years. Playing guitar, he formed a small band with 5 guys playing their first gig at Muhlenberg Gun Club on New Year's Eve earning $2.50 each. At age 15, David played guitar in the first Muhlenberg High School dance band. All through high school, his small group played at the St. Marco Club in Temple. David continued his schooling through the Muhlenberg School District. In 1943 while he was a senior, he studied mechanical drafting at the Wyomissing Polytechnic Institute where he alternated between one month of school and one month working in the industry. However, because the students were paid while working, he was drafted into the Army in December of 1943.
After being drafted in 1943, Dave was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas and assigned to the l29th Horse Calvary. He was designated a Platoon Sergeant and was retained at Fort Riley to instruct incoming recruits how to ride horses. In 1945, he was sent to Japan in the army of occupation and assigned to the Military Government Economic Division. On one assignment, David traveled to Nagasaki and Hiroshima to evaluate the economic recovery conditions following the release of the Atom bombs. During this time, he met a classmate from Muhlenberg who was in the Air Force. They formed a 4 man band with Dave playing drums and a male singer who sounded like Frank Sinatra.
Following his discharge from the Army on March l, 1946, Dave returned home. He worked for a few months at the American Casualty Company earning $37.50 a week. Using the G.L Bill, David attended night school for 6 months, graduating from Reading High School in 1947. He then studied commercial art at the Wyomissing Institute of Fine Arts until l950.
In 1950, David worked full time for the National Guard in Reading. The Korean War was heating up by this time. As a member of the 337 AAA Gun Battalion, he was sent to Fort Stewart, Georgia as a Master Sergeant. By the end of 1951, he drew the "lucky number" and was the only one from his unit to be\ sent to Korea. Assigned to the 937 Field Artillery, he was involved in 3 major campaigns. David held every enlisted rank from Private through Master Sergeant. His next promotion was from Master Sergeant to Second Lieutenant. This jump from enlisted to an officer is know as being "Battlefield Commissioned" and we was now a "Mustang Officer."
David returned from Korea in 1953 and was assigned to Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He completed 2 tours in Germany between 1954 and the early 60s. In 1958 he was assigned as a professor of Military Science and Tactics at Chicago High Schools' Lane Tech. He was later assigned as a district supervisor of 4 high schools in the ROTC program. Then he was assigned to the 5th Army Headquarters as Chief of the Plans Division. In 1964 he came back to the US to Fort Sill, received advanced officer training, and was promoted to Major.
In 1966 David was sent to Vietnam and assigned to the First Field Force Artillery as a Staff 4 Logistics Officer. Following this, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. During his time in Vietnam, he was involved in two major campaigns which saw combat action. Returning to the United States in 1967, Dave served in the Headquarter Continental Army in Virginia until his retirement on July 1, 1969.
He retired to Sciota, Pennsylvania and married Mary on June, 20 1970. They lived in Sciota from until 1987 when they moved to Myrtle Beach, S.C. In 1998 they decided to join St. Paul's UCC when Rev. Barbara Kershner Daniel was pastor.
He is survived by his wife Mary, daughters Elizabeth Boeshore of Bulter, PA , Barbara (Boeshore) wife of Robert Johnson of Miami, Fla., and daughter Debra (DeLong) wife of Dennis Rock of Spring Mountain, Sons David DeLong of Red Hill, PA and Scott DeLong of Green Lane, PA. Also surviving are grandchildren Rachel Johnson, Ethan Johnson, Andrew Boeshore, Darrin DeLong and Carrie (Breyer) wife of Robert Camargo and their son, David's great grandson Gabriel Camargo.
David was preceded in death by his brother Joseph Boeshore.
Funeral services will be May 4 at 11 a.m. St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 5 West Arch Street, Fleetwood. A viewing and visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church. Burial will be at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.
