Ivan W. Hess M.D.

IVAN W. HESS, MD, 94 Ivan W. Hess, MD, 94, husband of Thelma (Harley) Landes Hess, died Wednesday, at Peter Becker Community, Franconia Twp. He was a former resident of Upper Providence Twp. Dr. Hess was born on October 15, 1918, in Upper Providence Twp., and was a son of the late Samuel H. and Anna M. (Wenger) Hess. He was a 1935 graduate of Collegeville High School, a 1939 graduate of Ursinus College, and a 1943 graduate of Hahnemann Medical College. During World War Two, he served in the US Army as a Captain and medical officer in the Asia-Pacific Theater and during the occupation of Japan. Dr. Hess was a Limerick Twp. family physician from 1946 to 1990. During the 1950's he also maintained a Schwenksville office with the late Dr. LaVerne Junker. He served on the staff of Pottstown Memorial Medical Center and was instrumental in its creation from the merger of Pottstown Hospital and Memorial Hospital. Dr. Hess was a member of Augustus Lutheran Church where he served on its Vestry. He was a charter member, 50 year member, and past-president of the Collegeville Rotary Club; a member and past president of the Historical Society Of Trappe, Collegeville, Perkiomen Valley; and a director and past-president of the Lutheran Home At Germantown. He also was a member of the Limerick Twp. School Board and participated in formation of the Spring-Ford School District. In addition to his wife, Dr. Hess is survived by his sons, Ivan W., Jr., husband of Linda (Roesener) Hess, Franconia Twp., and R. Erich Hess, Upper Providence Twp.; his granddaughters, Alison, wife of Bryan Fishell, and Courtenay, wife of Matthew Kerr; his great-grandchildren, Nathan Kerr, Kathryn Kerr, Lauren Fishell and Julianne Fishell, and his step-children, Joanna (Landes) Oudin, Taftville, CT, and Donald Landis, Hampton, GA. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Kathryn (Myers) Hess, and his siblings, Clay C. Hess, H. Ober Hess, Mary H. Fridy and Martha H. Bowman. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, at Augustus Lutheran Church, with the Rev. G. Warren Weleck, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be private in the church cemetery.
