John A. Fortner

JOHN A. FORTNER, 88, OF SPRING CITY John A. Fortner, 88, of Spring City, formerly of Conshohocken, died Saturday, March 3, 2012, in the Southeastern Veterans Home, Spring City. He was a son of the late Hannah Fortner and husband of the late Veronica (Zadroga) Fortner. Born in Olney section of Philadelphia, on Feb. 28, 1924, John has been living in the Veterans Center of Spring City for the last 11 years. He was a graduate of Olney High School. After graduation, John entered the US Navy, serving from 1943 to 1946 during World War II. He was stationed in New Guinea and Philippines, and he served with the Seabees. He received an Honorable Discharge and upon returning home, he worked for the Reading Railroad, which later became Conrail. He worked there for 37 years before retiring in 1984 He is survived by a daughter, Bridget (David ) Lewis, Pottstown; grandsons, Timothy Lewis and Mark Lewis, both of Pottstown, and a granddaughter, Erica Lewis, Boston, MA. Services will be private; interment in St. Matthew's Cemetery, Conshohocken. Memorial contributions may be made in John's memory to St. Matthew's RC Church, 219 Fayette Street, Conshohocken, PA 19428.
