JOHN J. SMITH JR., 82 John J. Smith Jr., 82, of Park Manor, Cumru Township, died October 2, 2012 at 5 p.m. in the Reading Hospital, where he was a patient since September 28. He was the loving husband of Joyce E. (Keffer) Smith. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 7. Born in Cumru Township, he was a son of the late John J. Smith, Sr. and Florence (Helms) Smith. He was an Army

. He was a graduate of the former Shillington High School, Class of '48, Graduate of the former Millersville State College, Class of '52 and did his graduate studies at Temple University, '55-'56. John was an educator all his life starting at Pottsville High School teaching Industrial Arts from 1954-1963. While at Pottsville, he coached football and basketball. He later taught Math at Governor Mifflin Sr. High School from 1963-1988. While at Mifflin, he coached football and track form 1963-1971. He was a long time volunteer track official at Gov. Mifflin and was inducted into the Governor Mifflin Sports Hall of Fame in 2012. He was a member of Immanuel U.C.C., Shillington, serving on the consistory from 1968-1974 and was the former vice-president of their Fairview Cemetery Association. He was also a former director of the Mohnton Lion's Club and he and his wife were members of the Community Seniors, Mohnton. His wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were his greatest joy; his family was everything to him. Surviving in addition to his wife Joyce are his children, Deborah E. Keiser, Sinking Spring; Jeffrey S. Smith, Montrose Manor; John J. Smith III and his wife, Carol, Sinking Spring; James R. Smith and his wife, Ruth, Hanover, York County, and Denise A., wife of Sean Harlow, Spring City, Chester County. There are also eight grandchildren, Ryan, Derek, Valerie, Zachary, Joshua, Tyler, Conner and Garrett, and three great-grandchildren, Fiona, Evan and Riley. John was the youngest and last of nine children. Please join the Smith family in celebrating John's life on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Immanuel U.C.C., 99 South Waverly Street, Shillington, PA 19607. Rev. Dale Davis and Rev. Megan Huesgen, his pastors, will officiate. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Shillington.
