Nellie Bakay, 88, widower of John M. Bakay, of Coventry Manor Nursing Home, South Coventry Township, died peacefully in her sleep Saturday morning, Feb. 16, 2013, where she resided for 11 years.
Born in Pottstown, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Michael and Catherine (Berkchuk ) Slobodin.
Nellie was an assistant manager for the former Mary Jane Shoe Store of Pottstown for five years and then worked as a cashier/clerk for Rea & Derick Drug Store, also formerly of Pottstown for 12 years until her retirement in 1983.
Nellie was a deeply religious woman and was a longtime member of St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church on West Walnut Street in Pottstown, Pa . She loved animals, especially cats, and in her younger years enjoyed going to the casinos and traveling with her late husband. She also enjoyed music, singing, crafts and playing bingo at the nursing home.
Surviving Nellie is a daughter, Sandra J. "Sandy" Bakay, of Pottstown, Pa.
With her late husband and parents, Nellie was predeceased by a daughter, Diana M. Bakay, and two brothers, John and William Slobodin, as well as two sisters, Anne Pachik and Mary Nestorick.
Divine Liturgy will be celebrated in St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 425 W. Walnut St., Pottstown, Pa., Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Mykola Ivanov, pastor, officiating.
Interment will be in St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery, Douglassville, Pa.
A viewing will be Friday evening, Feb. 22, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m. with Panachida Services at 8 p.m. and Saturday morning from 9 to 10 a.m. at Warker-Troutman Funeral Home, 726 E. High St., Pottstown, Pa.
