Doris Jean Niehls Obituary
DORIS JEAN NIEHLS, 80, OF BARTO Doris Jean Niehls, 80, of Barto, PA passed on from this life Wednesday, March 26, 2014. She died on the family farm at the home of her son Jonathan and his wife Mary (Colden), with loving family. Doris was born November 21, 1933 in Cowden, IL. She was a lifelong member of the church of Christ. Doris is survived by her 3 sons: Mark husband of Beverly (Koch) of Douglassville, PA, Kevin husband of Jane (Wendel) of Barto, PA, and Jonathan (JD) husband of Mary (Colden) of Barto, PA. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren: John Mark, Lauren, Jenny, Nathan, Rachel, Natalie, Kaylie, Sarah, David, Daniel, Jonathan, Mary, and Jeremiah, along with seven great-grandchildren. Three additional great-grandchildren are on the way. Highlights of many days over the last several months were visits of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her high school sweetheart and loving husband Johnnie Mark of 62 years, and one great-granddaughter Julia Paige Niehls. Doris was a homemaker, seamstress, and farmer having grown up on the family farm in Cowden, IL where she was born and which she owned at the time of her passing. She and her husband purchased her current farm in PA in 1966. Doris worked at home on the family farm, gardening and preserving produce, made clothes for the family and volunteered at the schools her sons, grandchildren, and great grandchildren attended. After her sons were all in school she went to work at H&R Manufacturing in Boyertown, as a seamstress, where she worked for many years. Yard sale and thrift store shopping was her hobby and she always enjoyed picking up some clothing or toys for her children, grandchildren, or great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed gardening, quilting, and crafting. At the time of her death she was a member of the Chesmont Church of Christ, Pottstown. She served as a Bible class and Vacation Bible School teacher and volunteer in three congregations: the Coventry Hills Church of Christ, Pottstown, PA, the Roseville Church of Christ, Roseville, MN, and the Chesmont Church of Christ, Pottstown, PA. Doris's life was dedicated to living humbly as a Christian, loving and providing for her family, promoting the cause of Christ, and spreading the Gospel. Doris supported the education and schools her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren attended, specifically Coventry Christian Schools in Pottstown where all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren attended. She was a founding member of the Grandparents Gathering of Coventry Christian Schools which raises several thousand dollars annually for the school. She cherished the time spent with this group of close friends, some of whom she knew for several decades. Doris and her husband John were generous contributors over the years to the school and took great pride in supporting construction of the school's Events Center in 2010. She will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Coventry Christian Schools or the Chesmont Church of Christ, both located at 699 North Pleasantview Road, Pottstown, PA 19464-2615. A Memorial and Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at 6 p.m. in the Coventry Christian Schools Chapel, Pottstown. Emmitt Channell and Eric Williamson will be officiating. Final internment will be in the family plot in the Hubbartt Cemetery, Beecher City, IL. Catagnus Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Inc., Gilbertsville is in charge of arrangements. View obituaries or send condolences at www.catagnusfuneralhomes.com
