Richard Dougherty Obituary

RICHARD G. DOUGHERTY SR., 80, OF FRANKFORD, DE Richard G. "Doc" Dougherty Sr., 80, of Frankford, DE, formerly of Phoenixville, PA, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, March 4, 2013 at his home. Mr. Dougherty was born in Port Alleghany, PA, on April 21, 1932 son of the late George Francis and Theodate (Newcomb) Dougherty. He was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the United States Navy. "Doc" retired as a draftsmen engineer with the Yoh Company in Philadelphia, PA, in 1999 with over 25 years of service. He also served as the fire chief of Phoenixville, PA, from 1970-1977. He was a member of West End Fire Co of Phoenixville and taught fire school in Chester Co., and was recently honored during 9/11 services in Downingtown, PA. Doc enjoyed playing golf and visiting with his family and friends at Gull's Way Campground in Dagsboro, DE. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Brian Patrick Dougherty; a granddaughter, Brittanny Williams, and a brother, John Dougherty. "Doc" is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jean (Shaffer) Dougherty; a son, Richard G. Dougherty Jr. and his partner, Danny Thompson of Pottstown, PA; a daughter, Dawn H. (Ray) Williams of Elverson, PA; five grandchildren, Heather Thompson of Pottstown, PA; Tre' Williams and his fianc, Mercedes Murphy of North Coventry, PA; Kayla, Breanna and Zackary Williams, all of Elverson, PA; one great-granddaughter, Aaliyah Williams of North Coventry, PA, and a brother, Michael E. Dougherty of St. Lawrence, PA. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 16, 2013 at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 927 N. Franklin St., Pottstown, PA 19464, where friends and family may call after 9:30 a.m. Interment will be private. Pastor Rebecca Brenner will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Mr. Dougherty's name to St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 927 N. Franklin St., Pottstown, PA 19464 or Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963. Online condolences may be sent by visiting www.melsonfuneralservices.com
