Charles T. Carter Obituary
Charles T. Carter, 77, former religion editor and Bachelor Chef columnist at The Mercury, died Feb. 22 at his home on Jefferson Avenue in Pottstown. He was the son of the late Viola Malone.
Born in Pottstown, he was hired as a newsroom librarian at The Mercury in 1953, immediately after his graduation from Pottstown High School.
In 1957, he joined the U.S. Army, serving for three years. He then returned to The Mercury in 1960, when he was assigned to the church news beat, a position he held for 32 years.
He retired in February, 1992.
The news account of his retirement Feb. 6, 1992 noted that his contributions to the paper over nearly four decades involved more than church news. He wrote features, frequently helped on the police beat, and often took to the streets of Pottstown as the newspaper's "Roving Reporter," a feature that gauged public opinion on local and national questions of interest.
But he was best known for The Bachelor Chef, a weekly column drawing on his experience as a military cook and his three years of culinary arts training at Western Montgomery County Area Vocational-Technical School. He continued to write the column, sharing recipes with readers from its debut in 1985 past his retirement.
An accomplished pianist, Charles was the former pianist for the young adult choir and gospel chorus of Second Baptist Church. He also played at various nursing homes in the area and was a regular pianist at Manatawny Manor in Pottstown, where he enjoyed entertaining the residents.
He was known for his prowess in racket sports – tennis, squash, racquetball and table tennis.
After retiring from The Mercury, Charles began a second career as a personal caregiver and private duty nursing aide, serving several families locally and in Norwalk, Conn.
He is survived by numerous family members and loving friends.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the Ricketts Community Center, Beech and Grant streets, with Rev. Bruce Carter officiating.
In honor of Charles' love of cooking, family and friends are invited to bring a favorite dish for a potluck buffet to share along with memories of Charles.
