Gerald L. Benfield, 85, of Berkshire Commons, formerly of Gilbertsville, widower of Sonya K. (Martin) Benfield, died Monday at his residence. Born in Boyertown, he was a son of Lloyd Benfield and Elva (Moyer) Benfield. He attended Boyertown High School. Gerald first worked for Morysville Body Works. He then worked as a machinist for the former Reading Products in Boyertown and then for Stroh's Brewery in Fogelsville, retiring in 1994. He owned and operated his own sporting good store in Gilbertsville during the 1960's. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time at his cabin in the mountains of Centre County. He also coached little league baseball in Boyertown and was an avid gardener. He served in the Army during WWII. Surviving are two daughters, Deborah L. Braddock of Pottstown and Terese S. Detwiler, wife of Rev. David Detwiler of Reading; two sons, Darryl S. Benfield, husband of Denise of Exeter and Dean A. Benfield of Bechtelsville; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and two sisters, Darlene Jones of Hanover, PA and Bernice McMullen of Florida. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at 11 a.m. at St. John-Hill UCC, 620 Hill Church Road, Boyertown. Burial will be in Hill Church Cemetery. A viewing will be held 9:30-11 a.m. Saturday morning at the church. Arrangements are by the Morrell Funeral Home Inc., (www.MorrellFuneralHome.com).
