Hilda W. (Lorah) O'Connell, of Gilbertsville, widow of Frank M. O'Connell, died following a brief illness Saturday, Feb. 23, six days short of her 98th birthday.|
Born in New Berlinville, Mrs. O'Connell was the daughter of the late Maurice and Alice (Weller) Lorah. She had been employed as a clerk at Reichert's (formerly Grofe's) Store in Gilbertsville, and previously worked at the former Koons Cigar Box factory in Boyertown.
For 20 years following her husband's retirement as Gilbertsville postmaster, the two of them operated a business known as "Hilda's Hosiery" at Zern's Market.
Mrs .O'Connell had been the first school crossing guard in Gilbertsville, and for several decades served on the election board for Douglass Township.
For more than 25 years, she wrote a weekly newspaper column called "Gilbertsville in the News" for The Boyertown Times.
Mrs. O'Connell was a lifetime member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Boyertown where she played in the Kitchen Band of the former Ladies' Aid Society. She had also been active in the former Ladies Auxiliary of the Gilbertville Fire Company. Throughout her life, she was an avid card player, particularly "Hossey" and solitare.
She and her husband had been married for 62 years.
Aside from her parents and her husband, Mrs. O'Connell was predeceased by five sisters: Mabel Leister, Edna Pike, Edwinna Wren, Margaret Moyer and Alice Lorah; and by three brothers: Daniel, Russell and Maurice Lorah.
She is survived by a son, Dennis, of Gilbertsville.
Services will be held Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013 at 11 a.m. in the first-floor chapel at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 45 N. Reading Ave., Boyertown. A viewing will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. in the chapel. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.
