Michael Melnyk Sr., 92, formerly of the Reading and Topton area, passed away Sept. 29, 2012 at Berks Heim County Home.
Born in Reading on Oct. 13, 1919, he was a son of the late Pauline and Wasil Melnyk and was the widower of Elizabeth A. (Miller) Melnyk, who passed away Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012.
He is survived by three children and a sister: daughter Linda, wife of Michael Fillippini of Laureldale; daughter Beverly, wife of James Knowlton Sr. of Mt. Penn; son Michael Melnyk Jr., husband of Donna Loos of Mertztown; and his sister Mary, wife of George Shade, of Hyde Park.
His brother, Serico Melnyk, predeceased him.
He is also survived by nine grandchildren: Michael and David Fillippini; Peter Lysczek, husband of Martina; Jennifer Richter, wife of Matthew; Garth and James Knowlton Jr.; and Amanda, Jordan and Meagan Loos, and was predeceased by grandson, Michael Melnyk III in 2009; and two great-grandchildren, Paige and Shawn Lysczek.
He served his country in the Solomon Islands, South Pacific, New Guinea, and Australia from 1942 to 1944 as a U.S. Army Master Sgt. in WWII.
He was employed at Berkshire Knitting Mill, Reading and also worked at Alsace Textiles, Reading, until his retirement.
Michael was an amazing father, grandfather, and friend who loved the adventure in life and shared it with others.
He traveled the country and saw many places with his wife, children, and grandchildren. Michael always said he saw the world and had an amazing life. He will be sadly missed by everyone.
At the request of the family, there will be no visitation.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Margaret Roman Catholic Church, 925 Centre Avenue, Reading, PA 19601 at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 3. Interment with full military honors will be at Good Shepherd Cemetery, Laureldale.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Margaret's RC Church, 925 Centre Ave., Reading, PA 19601.
