Louis L. Etkin Obituary
LOUIS L. ETKIN, 92, FORMERLY OF POTTSTOWN Louis L. Etkin, 92, formerly of Pottstown, PA and New York City, NY, died on Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at Hearthstone at Amity, Douglassville, PA. He was the husband of the late Esther (Gutmaker) Etkin and Molly (Glassman) Etkin. Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late Moishe and Dora (Shubin) Etkin. Louis attended South Philadelphia High School. He then worked with his family in their various businesses. Mr. Etkin then joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. After Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served throughout several invasions, including North Africa, Sicily, Italy and on D-Day, he went into combat with the Rangers via the gliders. On June 11, 1944, he was captured by German forces, and spent the remainder of World War II as a Prisoner of War. Returning to civilian life, he attended the Manhattan Trade Center, where he was trained as an electrician. For over 30 years, he managed Pierpont Paint and Wall Paper in Queens, NY. He was a member of Congregation Mercy & Truth Synagogue, Pottstown, PA, the Pottstown Area Senior Center, V.F.W in NY and the Disabled Jewish War Veterans. Louis was a devoted Phillies and Eagle Fan. Survivors include three sons, Myles Etkin (Linda) of Glens Falls, NY; Larry Etkin of Minneapolis, MN, and Philip Matilsky (Louise) of Pottstown, PA; two daughters, Sheryl Goldes (David) of Queens, NY, and Karin DiGeorge (Jesse) of Queens, NY; one sister, Shirley Sanders of Florida; nine grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Entombment was held 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 19, 2014 at Beth Israel Memorial Park, Woodbridge, NJ. Rabbi Dr. Daniel Zucker officiated.
