Guy Riggs Obituary

Guy Wadsworth Riggs, Sr.

Buffalo - Guy Wadsworth Riggs, Sr., age 93, passed away peacefully while surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, May 20, 2017. Guy, a longtime resident of Poughkeepsie, was born on July 10, 1923 in Sacramento, CA. He was the son of Joseph Quire and Ruth Wadsworth.

A WWII veteran, Guy enlisted in the Navy after graduating from Patagonia High School in 1942. He saw action in Africa, Sicily, and Italy, and was the recipient of three battle stars. In 1944, he was appointed to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, graduating in 1948. He remained with the Navy as a commissioned officer until 1952. After his distinguished Naval service, Guy then began his career with IBM where he was employed for more than 30 years, retiring in 1986.

On February 22, 1958, Guy married Selma Hubka and together they raised seven children. Guy became active in politics in the late 1960's, first running for local office in the Binghamton area. After moving to Poughkeepsie, he joined the Libertarian Party. In 1972, he became the first Libertarian candidate to run for office in the state of New York. His campaign committee went on to form the Mid Hudson Libertarian Club. Guy was always interested in writing, and became well known for his Letters to the Editor published in the Poughkeepsie Journal. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Poughkeepsie and later joined the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.

Guy was an avid reader who also enjoyed classical music. He and Selma attended many concerts at Vassar College, the Vanderbilt Mansion and West Point. They enjoyed square dancing and were members of the Boots and Bows Square Dancing Club, where Guy was a caller!

Guy is survived by his daughter Ruth Ann (Joseph); daughter Maribeth (Edward); daughter Karen (John); daughter Laurie (Paul); daughter Erica (James); son Guy (Dawn); son Gordon; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews and their children.

I was sorry to hear about Guy's passing. I am sure he is having love feasts with everyone who passed before him. I will never forgot how passionate he was about politics - he was the best know Libertarian in Poughkeepsie and a fine man. My condolences to all the Riggs' kids.
