Dreishpoon M.D., Irving
Irving H. Dreishpoon, MD POUGHKEEPSIE - Irving H. Dreishpoon, MD, beloved physician to many, dearest husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, died peacefully on July 28, 2015. Irv, as he liked to be known, lived a long and distinguished life. Irving was born in Brooklyn, NY, on April 15, 1925, to Isadore and Anna Dreishpoon. He attended Lincoln High School in Brooklyn, where he excelled as an athlete in swimming, /diving, baseball, and basketball. In 1944, having been accepted to the University of Louisville, Kentucky, on a basketball scholarship, after his first year, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He became a navigator and bombardier with the 8th Air Force, serving with the 381st based out of England. He flew 28 missions in a B17 over Germany, 18 of which were on "The Tomahawk Warrior," whose heroic crew had to abort the plane's last mission with two engines on fire. Returning to civilian life and the University of Louisville in 1945, Irv gained acceptance to the medical school without completing an under graduate degree, and in l950 he earned his Medical degree with honors. In 1951, the young Dr. Dreishpoon married Georgene Simon, daughter of Dr. Max Michael Simon, a Poughkeepsie general surgeon. Irv interned at the Poly Clinic Hospital in New York City. He began his residency at the New York Lying-In Hospital and completed it at Mount Sinai Hospital, the newly opened Klingenstein Pavilion Obstetrical Division. In l954, he opened a private practice upstate, the second board certified obstetrician/gynecologist registered in Poughkeepsie. A progressive obstetrician/gynecologist, Dr. Dreishpoon was an early advocate for women's rights during the l970s. His steadfast commitment to pro-choice, in spite of public opposition, was courageous and laudable. Irv's vocation was medicine, but his passion, in addition to playing tennis, golf, skiing, and squash, was fishing. An inveterate angler, he tied his own flies and traveled worldwide. He especially enjoyed fly-fishing for bone fish during the 1970s and 1980s in the ocean flats surrounding the family's Bahamian home in Green Turtle Cay, Abaco. Irv leaves behind his wife of 64 years, Georgene; his three children, Lisa (Gordon) Weiss of Poughkeepsie, NY; Doug (Lisa Rafalson) Dreishpoon of Buffalo, NY; and Nancy (Sam) Goldwitz of Oxford, CT. His grandchildren include Garrett (Brittney) Weiss; Marion Weiss; AnnaRose Goldwitz; and Maia and Mina Dreishpoon. He poignantly met his 8-month-old great grandchild, Gavin, before his passing. He is survived by an older sister, Ida Levin, of Washington, DC. Those wishing to make donations may contribute to Vassar Temple, Poughkeepsie, NY, or the charity of their choice. A private graveside service will be held at the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery on Friday, July 31, 2015.
