Alan T. Covert(1934 - 2013)

Alan T. Covert

Rhinebeck - Alan T. Covert, 78, died peacefully on Monday, March 4, 2013 at Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck, NY, from complications due to congestive heart failure. He had been a resident of Ferncliff Nursing Home in Rhinebeck since January. Before that time he resided at the Culinarians' Home in New Paltz, NY. From 1986 to 2012 he shared a home in Tivoli, NY with Audria Covert, his wife of 33 years.

Born on September 19, 1934 in Englewood, NJ, he was the son of George T. and Mathilda C. (Hanneken) Covert. He married Audria R. Cardascia on August 17, 1979 in Hyde Park, NY. Audria, who survives him, resides at Ferncliff.

Alan served in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959, where he worked as a computer technician at Fort Meade, MD. He was a member of the United States Air Force Reserve from 1959 to 1963.

After 38 years at IBM, Poughkeepsie, he retired as a Senior Facilities Coordinator. In his retirement he started Alcove Home Repairs which kept him busy with odd jobs, even sharing his skills through teaching; he was proud of his time at BOCES, Pough., where he guided underprivileged teens in a building renovation. He also worked part time at The Old Soap Factory in Red Hook and for The Village of Tivoli Department of Public Works where he was instrumental in the renovation of the Historic Watts dePeyster Hall. Proudly serving as Tivoli's Litter Patrol Officer, he became a local celebrity and fixture around town and in the Village's annual parades. Alan cared deeply about his community. He adored his family and was a devoted husband. We will miss his kind nature, enjoyment of life, and charmingly blunt sense of humor.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Audria R. (Armeno) Covert, Rhinebeck, NY are three stepdaughters, Debra Elkind & husband David of E. Sandwich, MA; Donna Brandon of Kingston, NY; and Christine von der Linn & husband Michael of Metuchen, NJ, two brothers, Lee Covert & wife Dorie, of Aiken, SC; and Richard Covert, formerly of Highland, NY, nephew Curtis Covert & wife Laura, nieces Tracy Withers & husband Brian; Jessica & Kelly, and nephew, Theodore 'Teddy' Covert, cousins Claire Lill and Kenneth Lill; and Brian Hanneken, granddaughters, Lara McGlynn & husband Patrick, and Hallie Rose Simpson, great granddaughters, Stellablue & Raven Girard; Willow & Layla McGlynn.
