Wappingers Falls - Daniel P. Margiotta, 97, of Wappingers Falls, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2013, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie following a brief illness. He was born on March 20, 1915, in New York City, one of nine children of Anthony and Marie Victoria Margiotta. He often spoke of how much he enjoyed growing up in Washington Heights and taking care of a horse named Frank that pulled his father's ice wagon.
His family moved to the Fordham section of the Bronx, where as a young man he worked for Teitel Brothers Dairy Shop on Arthur Avenue. Daniel was a Camera Shot at the 1939-40 World's Fair in New York, snapping photographs of visitors, but he was most proud of the shots he took of his girlfriend, Madaline Cascione.
Daniel and Madaline were married on February 16, 1941, at St. Martin of Tours Church in the Bronx. They had three sons and celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary just prior to her death in 2011.
Daniel opened an Italian grocery on 169th Street & Boston Post Road in the Bronx, which he ran during the rationing days of World War II. He later started the Paradise Bleach Company, which he ran until his retirement.
Always with a smile on his face, he enjoyed having fun with his family and spending time at the Jersey Shore. He still loved playing cards and "Lotto" with his friends and neighbors at Berkley Square.
Daniel is survived by his youngest brother, Victor G. Margiotta and his wife, Lucy; his sons, Daniel Margiotta, Jr. and his wife, Geraldine; Anthony Margiotta and his wife, Vivian; and Victor Margiotta and his wife, Lorraine; his six grandchildren, Lorraine Margiotta; Daniel Margiotta and his wife, Maria; Dina Mercer and her husband, Robert; Michelle Rockett and her husband, Matthew; Victor Margiotta; and Gina Margiotta; and his five great-grandchildren, Jonathan DiSanto, Nicholas Margiotta, Robert Margiotta, Vincent Margiotta, and Charlotte Rockett.
The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at the Intensive Care Unit at Vassar Brothers Medical Center for the care and compassion shown to our father.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, January 21, 2013 from 3 - 7 p.m. at the Robert H. Auchmoody Funeral Home, 1028 Main Street, Fishkill, NY.
