Gardiner, NY - Donald Clinton, age 83, of Gardiner, passed away on Friday, October 18, 2013 at Archcare at
Ferncliff Nursing Home, Rhinebeck, NY.
Born on February 15, 1930, in Gardiner, NY, he was the youngest of seven children of the late Leo and Mary (Klyne) Clinton. Donald married Evelyn Amundsen on February 18, 1950 at The Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Brooklyn NY. She predeceased him on June 4, 1993.
Don served in the Army
from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean War
, where he received the Bronze Service Star. He learned his cooking skills in Korea and continued to cook as if he was cooking for an army.
He started his working career learning to be a butcher at Schiro's Market in Gardiner. He was also a part-time Bartender at the Ireland Corners Hotel. Soon after that, he was employed by IBM Poughkeepsie retiring in 1987 after 37 years. His last assignment was as a Project Manager in Product Publications. After retirement he could be found several times a day having a cup of coffee on the porch of the Ireland Corners General Store where everybody knew Don. He had lots of practice hanging around Ireland Corners for 83 years.
He was a lifelong parishioner of St. Charles Borromeo Church, a member of VFW
Brannen VandenBerg Post #8645, and was a past President and past Vice President of the Gardiner Fire Dept joining in 1948.
He could be found for the past 20+ years on the sidelines of Baseball, Softball, Soccer and Lacrosse fields along with Ice Hockey Rinks watching grandchildren, Rob and Christine and their teammates where he and his son Jeff were "Grandpa and Uncle Jeff" to many. He also found himself enjoying Dance Competitions in Arizona and Florida watching his talented granddaughters Taylor and Kylee.
Surviving are one daughter and three sons, Jill and her husband William Gilbert of Newburgh, NY, James and his wife Barbara Clinton of Naples, FL, Jeffrey Clinton of Gardiner, NY, Gary and his wife Lee Clinton of Phoenix, AZ: a brother-in-law, Joseph Longo of Ronkonkoma, NY; grandchildren, Rob and Christine Gilbert of Newburgh, NY; Taylor and Kylee Clinton of Phoenix, AZ; and many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, October, 23, 2013 from 4-8pm at Copeland Funeral Home, Inc., 162 South Putt Corners Road, New Paltz, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, October 24, 2013 at 10:00am at his beloved, St. Charles Borromeo Church, Route 44/55, Gardiner, NY. Burial will follow in St. Charles Cemetery, Gardiner, NY.
