Edward D. Sottile
Poughkeepsie - Edward Daniel Sottile, 89, passed away peacefully on May 11, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. Edward was born October 21, 1923 to Dominick and Theresa (Gallo) Sottile in Kingston, NY. He was the youngest of eight all of whom predeceased him, Rudy, Peter, John, Lena, Margaret, Florence, and Alfred. When his country needed him Edward enlisted in the United States Marine Corps
serving in the South Pacific for three years, as part of the 22nd Marines, 6th Division, including the assaults on Kwa JaLien and Eniweitor Atols in the Marshall Islands. He received the Presidential Unit Citation, two Navy Unit Citations, and five Battle Stars. He was a charter member of Carmens Ramputi No. 861 Marine Corps League and a member of the 22nd Marine Association. He was proud of his Marine Corps service and embodied the ideal of "once a Marine, always a Marine." A graduate of Kingston Schools and Krissler School of Business, and worked at IBM until his retirement in 1986 after 39 years as a Production Control Analyst. Edward loved every aspect baseball as a young man growing up and never missed an opportunity to watch the Yankees, his favorite pass time. For many years he made Rosary beads to send to the missions. Upon his return from service, he married the love of his life, Carmela Forte, on April 1st, 1945, at St. Edward Chapel, U.S. Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Florida. They eventually settled in Poughkeepsie. He was predeceased by Carmela in 2003, after 56 years of marriage. He was also predeceased by his daughter, Theresa Anderson, in 2003 and son in law Dr. Douglas Anderson In 2012. He is survived by his daughter, Rosalie Fegan and husband, Donald and son, Edward and wife Janet. He is also survived by his grand children Jennifer Fegan Szalay and husband Frank Szalay, Sarah Fegan Burrone, and husband Ernest Burrone, Katie Fegan and boyfriend Brian Jacoby, Ben Anderson and wife Alyssa, Erik Anderson and wife Kori, Eddie Sottile and wife Vita, Rebecca Sottile, Alyssa and Alexandra Sottile, Jessica Thorne Faurot and husband Charles, and Joanna Thorne. His great grandchildren, Rosemary, Summer and Kaya Szalay; Daniel and Jake Burrone, Tea Sottile, Eddie and Eric Sottile; Charlie and Malia Anderson, Ellie and Karter Anderson, Charlie and Amanda Faurot, never failed to put a smile on his face. They loved answering his question, "what's new?" He was a very special man, an amazing husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, uncle and brother, and most of all dearly loved by his family. Semper Fi !
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, May 15th from 2 to 4PM & 6 to 8PM at Allen Funeral Home 3270 Franklin Ave., Millbrook, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10AM Thursday, May 16th at St. Joseph's Church in Millbrook.
