Hyde Park - Geoffrey Louis Roberts, 65, died on Friday, August 23, 2013, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie.
Born July 19, 1948 in Mineola, Long Island, he was the son of the late Leonard and Dorothy Roberts, and step-son of Edward "Pop" Rothwell.
Geoffrey served in the United States Navy
as a Special Operations Combat Medic during the Vietnam War
. As a conscientious objector, he proudly supported his fellow soldiers in this non-combative role.
In Hyde Park, he married Catherine Wasvary. Mrs. Roberts survives at home.
He began his career at Albany Medical Center as a Pulmonary Function Technician, and then went on to Vassar Brothers Hospital, where he worked as an Electrocardiography (EKG) Technician. He retired from IBM in Poughkeepsie.
Geoffrey was a graduate of Massapequa High School and attended the Culinary Institute of America.
He ran Track and Field in high school, and was a member of the Ralph T. Waterman Bird Club and the Connecticut Tripoli Rocket Club. He also served as the chef on the Sloop Clearwater for a number of years.
Geoffrey will be remembered for his peaceful demeanor, quick-wit, and kind heart. He took great pleasure in day-trip adventures with his wife, Catherine, including trout fishing, bird watching, and model rocket launching. He loved horse-racing, literature, and relished in completing The New York Times crossword.
Mr. Roberts was a published poet, had an uncanny ear and appreciation for a wide array of music, a self-taught sketch artist and harmonica player. He was an excellent cook and food enthusiast. He had a very tender relationship with his 4 year-old grandson, Stephen Geoffrey, with whom he enjoyed kite-flying at the Vanderbilt Estate, nature walks, picnicking, and extensively discussing the characteristics of various dinosaurs.
He will be greatly missed and remembered by his friends and family.
Survivors include his loving wife, Catherine Wasvary Roberts of Hyde Park; sons, Randal Edward Roberts of Oakland, California and Justin Parker Roberts of Bremerton, Washington; daughter, Summer Lynn Schwartz of Kerhonkson and her husband, Joseph; grandson, Stephen Geoffrey Schwartz; siblings Suzan Gannon of Fort Myers, FL, Dorothy Carwile of Vernon, NJ, Wayne Rothwell of Bay Shore, NY, and Sandra Gibbons of West Palm Beach, FL; and several nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, Geoffrey was predeceased by his step-sister, Gail Meagher of Rockville Center, NY.
A special thanks to the wonderful staff at VBMC. Their knowledge and encouragement have been priceless to Geoffrey with his battle.
Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service with military honors will be held at 11 am, Wednesday, August 28th at Sweet's Funeral Home, Inc, Route 9, Hyde Park, NY.
