George Furman(1913 - 2012)

George R. Furman

Fishkill - George R. Furman, a longtime area resident, passed away at home on Monday, November 12, 2012. He was 99 years old. Born on January 1, 1913 in Newtown, Queens, NY, he was the son of John R. Furman and Helen Wagner Furman.

George married Martha Bush on July 7, 1947. Mrs. Furman predeceased him on September 17, 1998. In addition to his wife, George was predeceased by his daughter, Judith Furman Villandre and a brother, Warren Furman.

After graduating from Newton High School, he attended Columbia University where he received a MS degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1937. George worked at Texaco Research Center in Glenham, NY as a Technologist from 1937 until his retirement in 1978.

George had many hobbies, which included sailing with his family as a child on the Long Island Sound. He also had a passion for photography, which paid for his tuition at Columbia University, where he was the chief photographer for the school's yearbook. Another part time job as a young many was as an assistant organ turner at Radio City Music Hall in NYC.

During World War II, George worked on special projects for the military at Texaco. After retirement, he obtained his private pilot's license and owned a small airplane with his friend, Harry Calhoun, which he flew all across the country. He built his own home, and he loved to tinker in his workshop. He also enjoyed painting as a hobby.

In the 1950's he was the photographer for the Cecilwood Theatre in Fishkill, NY. Also a past member of the Glenham Board of Fire Commissioners. In the mid 1960's he was a member of the Glenham School Board of Education. He was a set designer for the Dutchess County Ballet Company and a member of the East Bank Artists.

George is survived by his sons, David Furman of Glenham and Peter Furman and his wife, Sandy, of Wappingers Falls, where he made his home for the past two years. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Laura and Stephen Villandre, Meaghan, Melissa, Michelle and Matthew Furman. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Zoe and Rafael Villandre and long time family friend, Vic Ortiz. The family would also like to thank Linda Wanco for her care and compassion over the past several months.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, November 16th from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at the Robert H. Auchmoody Funeral Home, 1028 Main St., Fishkill, NY. A Graveside Service will be held on Saturday, November 17th at 10:30 am at the Fishkill Rural Cemetery.
