Gladys Bantel, age 87, of Highland, NY, died on Saturday, July 27, 2013, at Quaker Hill Manor, Hyde Park, NY.
Gladys was born on November 28, 1925 in New Paltz, NY. She was the daughter of the late Judson and the late Edith Lillberg Van Vliet. She graduated from Highland High School and Sheden Cosmetology School. She married George Bantel in 1949. George predeceased her on June 22, 2002.
A lifetime resident of the Highland, Gladys was interested in community affairs. She was very involved in getting the fire and light district extended to West Lloyd and tirelessly worked in making Fire Station #2 become a reality. She served over 25 years as an election inspector for the general and fire elections. Gladys was an active member of AARP Chapter 975 serving as past president, corresponding secretary, and social director on many committees. Gladys volunteered helping with bingo at local nursing homes and at blood drives. Her tireless effort in sending cards and calling or helping others was her passion in life.
She is survived by two sons, Richard and his wife Kathy Bantel of West Allenhurst, NJ, Alan and his wife Donna Bantel of Red Hook, NY, grandson, Branden Bantel of Red Hook, NY; and a granddaughter, Caitlin Bantel of West Allenhurst, NJ.
Gladys was predeceased by her husband, George Bantel and a brother William Van Vliet in 1994.
Friends and relatives may call at Copeland Funeral Home, Inc., 162 South Putt Corners Road, New Paltz, NY on Tuesday, July 30, 2013 from 4pm to 7pm. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at 11am at the funeral home with the Rev. Dan Whitley, officiating. Burial will follow at Lloyd Cemetery.
