Grace Husted Crawford
Millbrook - Grace Husted Crawford, 91, passed away Tuesday April 30, 2013, in her home at The Fountains at Millbrook.
Born November 22, 1921, in Coleman Station, Town of Northeast, she was the daughter of Joseph and Augusta Husted. She attended the Coleman Station schoolhouse and graduated from Millerton High School in 1938. She was married to George 'Babe' Jones in 1942 and spent her young married life in Millerton, where she was an elder of the Millerton Presbyterian Church. In 1966 she married Francis Crawford and moved to Poughkeepsie where she resided until 2010. Most recently she has lived in the Village of Millbrook and then with her many friends and the loving staff at The Fountains, where Grace was known as 'the butterfly girl'. Throughout her life she was a joy to everyone who knew her. She is remembered by many as the smiling face at the drive-in window at Marine Midland Bank in Poughkeepsie. She is truly loved by her many neighbors on Grand Avenue. When she moved to Millbrook she was adopted by the employees of the Reardon Briggs Hardware Store who were always eager to give her a helping hand. She would never miss a party and was always young at heart. Shopping was her passion. She never saw a pair of shoes she didn't need to own. Many claim that they never saw her in the same outfit twice, but you could count on seeing her frequently wearing purple. For years she lovingly cared for her husband, Fran, as his health declined.
Her family was privileged to have her in their life. Their sadness will be tempered by memories of many happy times together. She was predeceased by her husband in 2006 and her sister Betty O'Riley in 2004. She is survived by her sister, Janet Flanigan, of Millbrook, and step daughter Linda Kaplan (Sanford) of Millerton. Her nieces and nephews were honored to serve as her surrogate children: Michael Flanigan and Debra Flanigan (her special guardian angels), Pat Flanigan (Mary) and Mary Cross (Richard), all of Millbrook; Nancy Schultz (Jack) of Copake Lake; Jill Flanigan of LaGrange; Lea Howard (Aaron) of The Villages, FL; Teri Denfeld (Harold) of Charlestown, RI; and many great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her cousins Kathleen Fraleigh (Richard) of Poughkeepsie and Jane Wells of Salisbury, CT. A celebration of Grace's life will take place on Sunday May 5 at 2pm in the stone chapel at The Fountains, 79 Flint Road, Millbrook.
Flowers may be delivered to The Fountains main lobby.
