James de Guire
POUGHKEEPSIE - James de Guire, 79, of Fern Lane, died on Christmas Day, 2012. He was born on July 20, 1933 in Lincoln, RI. A decorated veteran, James served in the US Air Force
from 1950 to 1957. James earned his Bachelor's in history and Master's in sociology from the University of Connecticut. James went on to teach at Green Mountain College and Ithaca College. He and his family moved to Poughkeepsie in 1965. During this time, James worked at the Poughkeepsie Urban Renewal Agency and continued his teaching career at Dutchess Community College, Marist, and Vassar. For many years he taught sociology at Green Haven Correctional Facility.
James had a great interest in martial arts and earned a Black Belt in karate. He taught many classes for both adults and children. He had a knack for growing houseplants and enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening. He appreciated many styles of music and as an adult, learned how to play guitar. Jim was well known for his big batches of chili and chowder.
James was the husband of the late Ann (Chambers) de Guire, father of Kendal von Sydow (Clas) of Stockholm, Sweden, Laurel de Guire (Karl Schmitt) of Port Washington, N.Y., Jamie V. Hanley (Michael) of Clifton Park, N.Y., and brother to Barry Butler (Susan Coady) of Standish, ME. James was the proud grandfather of four grandsons, James, John and Andrew Hanley, and Ethan Schmitt. Several nieces, nephews and their families also survive him.
Jim was a voracious reader and enjoyed frequent trips to the library. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in James de Guire's name to the Poughkeepsie Public Library District (PPLD) 93 Market Street, Poughkeepsie NY 12601
