James E. Hawco
Rhinebeck - James E. Hawco, 92, a longtime Rhinebeck resident, died Saturday, Dec 1, 2012 at his summer home on the Lake Michigan shore in Manistee, MI.
Born on March 6, 1920, in Quincy MA, he was the son of the late James and Theresa (McCarthy) Hawco who were both immigrants to this country from Newfoundland.
Mr. Hawco graduated cum laude from Boston College in 1942 and joined the US Navy. He attained the rank of Lieutenant and served as gunnery officer on the USS Murray and the USS Daly, Fletcher-class destroyers, in the Pacific Theatre.
He married Elizabeth Ann Cudihy in Marblehead, MA on Dec 2, 1944. She predeceased him on Dec 18, 1983.
Since moving to Rhinebeck in 1960, Mr. Hawco was active in community affairs. He was a member of the Town of Rhinebeck Planning Board for over 25 years and was instrumental in the creation and implementation of Village water and sewer systems. He was a board member and trustee of the Starr Library and a longtime communicant of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Rhinebeck.
He is survived by his children; Mary Ann Hyland of Rochester NY; Margaret Shenk of Annapolis MD; Sarah Gilligan of Bethesda MD; James Edward "Ted" Hawco of Grand Rapids MI and Timothy Hawco of San Francisco CA. He is also survived by a brother, George Hawco of Hartford CT; five grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was also predeceased by a brother, Francis Hawco.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:00 AM on Mon Dec 10 at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Rhinebeck NY. Interment will be in the family plot at St Joseph's Cemetery, Rhinecliff.
