John "Jack" Shaw

HOPEWELL JUNCTION - John F. "Jack" Shaw, Sr., 69, a lifelong area resident, died on Friday, November 2, 2012 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center following a short illness.

Born in Jamaica, Queens on March 17, 1943, he was the son of Walter G. and Genevieve Schweigert Shaw. Jack retired as a Sergeant with the Dutchess County Sheriff's Department in 2002 after 34 years of service and was awarded the Citation for Lifesaving in 1980. He was a member of the Blue Knights Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club.

Jack was a very dedicated member of the East Fishkill Fire District. He served on the Dutchess County Response Team; was a member of both Hillside Lake Fire Company #3 and Wiccopee Fire Company #4; was a member of the East Fishkill Fire Police; was a former ambulance driver with the East Fishkill Rescue Squad; had been in charge of the East Fishkill Color Guard; and assisted with Bingo Night at Company #3. In addition, he was also very involved with the Boy Scouts of America Troops 227 and 2609, and had served as Commissioner from 1982-1984. He was a former member of the Wappingers Elks, BPOE#2409, where he served as an inside guard and a member of the House Committee; and managed the East Fishkill Girls Softball League in 1978.

Jack loved riding his Harley whenever he could. Deep sea fishing and camping were some of his favorite pastimes. He was the first Santa at the Dutchess Mall and continued for many more years as Santa for the Galleria Mall. He enjoyed his daily visits to Brookmeade Deli to discuss popular topics with the regulars. He also loved NASCAR and his favorite driver was #48, Jimmy Johnson. When he was younger, Jack enjoyed hunting.

On December 21, 1966 at the Hopewell Reformed Church, Jack married Irma Stibbens who survives at home. He is also survived by his daughter, Michelle Shaw and her fiancé, Thomas Truss, Sr.; and his son, John F. Shaw, Jr. of Las Vegas, NV.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. Members of the Fire Department will conduct a service at 7:30pm. The Funeral Service will be held on Friday at 10am at the funeral home followed by interment in Fishkill Rural Cemetery.
