POUGHKEEPSIE - Joseph D. Longobardi, age 80 of Poughkeepsie, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 16 at Vassar Hospital surrounded by family. Born in Poughkeepsie on August 16, 1933, he was a lifelong resident and the son of Joseph and Marguerite Longobardi. He was a graduate of Poughkeepsie High School class of '51 and served his country with the US Army during the Korean War. He received his bachelors and his masters degrees from SUNY New Paltz. Joseph married Elizabeth Longobardi (neeReyes) and they recently celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary. He was a beloved social studies teacher at Poughkeepsie High School for 26 years where he was also the varsity tennis coach. He was an avid tennis player and continued to play regularly through this past year. He enjoyed traveling the world with his wife, Elizabeth and was a NY Giants & Yankees fan. He also enjoyed doing the daily crossword puzzle and reading about history and current events, both local and worldwide. He and Elizabeth often went biking and cross-country skiing and were long time members of the Hudson Valley Ski Club. Joseph is survived by his wife, Elizabeth and daughters Dr. Jennifer Longobardi and her husband, Alex Ungerer, and Miriam Longobardi, who followed the family footsteps and is a teacher in the Chappaqua School District. His six grandchildren were the light of his life. Olivia, Julia, Isabel, Amanda, Eddie-Joseph, and Heather will cherish their memories of his loving care. He is one of nine children and is survived by Louise Wolkoff (Ralph, d.), Patricia Chamuris (William), Peter Longobardi (Betty, d.), Vincent Longobardi (Leilani,d.), Donald Longobardi (Geraldine), David Longobardi (Donna), Florence Herrington (Richard) and is predeceased by Lillian Anthony (Frank). He has dozens of nieces and nephews who also mourn his passing. Joseph will be forever loved and remembered as a devoted husband, father and grandfather who showered love and affection on his family. He touched many lives and was beloved by all who knew him, however briefly. The family would like to thank two of his most dedicated doctors, Dr. Vincent Beltrani and Dr. Jedd Wolchok. Miller & Son Funeral Home, Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. Services are Monday 10 AM in the Funeral Home. Burial will follow with Military Honors in the family plot at Calvary Cemetery, Poughkeepsie, NY.
