Joseph P. Skovan

Poughkeepsie - Joseph P. Skovan, 95, of Poughkeepsie, NY, died Thursday, May 16, 2013 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center at Castle Point, NY. Born in Poughkeepsie on September 29, 1917, he was the son of the late George and Mary Tomcho Skovan. Joe served in the US Navy during WWII as a Seabee. On January 14, 1951 he married Anne E. Fortino at Mt. Carmel Church, and she predeceased him in 2004. Joe at worked for IBM in Poughkeepsie as a machinist and after that he worked at Rojon Electronics, retiring in 1976. Joe was a member of St. Martin de Porres Church and he loved golf, was an avid Yankees and Giants fan and enjoyed bowling. He was also a member of the Pirate Canoe Club, IBM Quarter Century Club, American Legion and the VFW Clubs. Joe is survived by his sons and daughter-in-laws, Joseph M. and Ruth Skovan of Pleasant Valley, Robert and Diane Skovan of LaGrange, and his daughter and son-in-law Donna Francis-Puhala and her husband Edward of Poughkeepsie. Also surviving is his brother William Skovan of Clinton Corners, NY and his grandchildren Katrina Skovan, Michael and Kristen Skovan and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife who predeceased him, Joe was also predeceased by his brothers John, Frank, George and Steve Skovan and his sisters Elizabeth and Isabel. The Family would like to thank the B2 nurses, aides and recreational therapists at Castle Point Medical Center for their help and caring. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 from 4-8pm at the William G. Miller & Son Funeral Home, Inc., 371 Hooker Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at 10:00am at St. Martin de Porres Church. Burial will follow with Military Honors at St. Peter's Cemetery.
