Lelar Winslow Obituary

Lelar Ola Winslow

Poughkeepsie - Lelar Ola Debrow Winslow was born August 17, 1923 in Tillery, North Carolina. She went to her eternal rest at home, surrounded by family on June 11, 2014. Lelar was educated in the Brooklyn School System and graduated from the former Girls High School.

Two years before World War II, Lelar met and married Charles Lee Winslow. On July 4th she gave birth to their only son, Dennis Charles Winslow.

In 1966, Lelar was employed by the City of New York at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn where she held the title of Electrocardiogram Technician until she retired in 1986 after 20 years of faithful service.

During Lelar's lifetime, she and the family enjoyed traveling to different states. She also loved to shop especially with QVC. She was a QVC queen along with her friend and caretaker, Fran Markowitz.

In 1991, she moved to Poughkeepsie, NY.

Lelar has always known and believed that God would take care of her. When moving to the area, she became a member of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, here in Wappingers Falls, NY under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Edward L. Hunt. Upon her joining the church pastor advised everyone her first name is "Mother". She felt so honored and humbled to have been given that title. Moms loved her Bethel family and they loved her. From the young people to the seniors, all she talked about was her family and the love that is in that church.

She leaves fond memories with one son Dennis, daughter-in-law, Karen, adopted daughter, Evelyn Newton; special cousin/daughter Audrey Hudgins, Suffolk, VA, grandsons, Sean (Allison) of Woodridge, NY, Derek (Shanelle) of Albany, NY; great-granddaughters, Arianna and Jordyn; great-grandsons, Kenan and Avery; grand-goddaughters, Tia and Kia Liles of Poughkeepsie, NY; nieces Sheryl (Lloyd) Lawrence, Pflugerville, TX; Rose (Lawrence) Utendahl, Clanton, AL; brother-in-law, Warren L. Harris, Suffolk, VA. Last but not least 'my son, my son' Pastor Hunt and my sweetheart, Aurelia Hunt, and a host of cousins and family friends.

Family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17, 2014 and Wednesday, June 18 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, 2607 South Avenue, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at the church; Rev. Dr. Edward L. Hunt will officiate. Entombment will then follow at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, South Avenue, Poughkeepsie.

Dennis and Karen:
There aren't enough words to say how sad I am that Mother Winslow is no longer with us in the physical; the tears are stinging my eyes, my heart hurts; nevertheless, I rejoice in knowing that this beautiful woman has gone home to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, whom she loved and served diligently in all that she said, and all she did.

Mother Winslow made such a deep impact on my life with her infectious laugh, beautiful smile, quick wit, and ready to dispense words of wisdom, comfort and encouragement. Proverbs 31 has a description of Mother Winslow: "She opens her mouth in wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. . . Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised" (Proverbs 31:26, 30, NASB). I love you Mother Winslow.

May the Lord bless you, keep and comfort you in this time of sorrow. I love you, and will keep you in my prayers.
