Louis D. Werner

Poughkeepsie - Louis D. Werner, 79, loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend passed away at home on February 9, 2013. Born February 17, 1933 in Highland, NY he was the son of the late Louis and Carrie Werner.

Lou proudly served his country as Staff Sergeant in the US Army. On Sept 25, 1954 he married the love of his life, Maija, they shared 55 loving years together. They proudly raised their 2 children; Kevin Werner of Hyde Park and Disa Werner. Maija predeceased him in 2008 and his brother Paul Werner in 2012.

He is survived by his sister; Augusta Gutierrez of NM. Lou was a Deputy Sheriff with the Dutchess Co. Sheriff's Dept for 28 years, later joining the Teamsters Union Local 445. He also worked for the NYS Bridge Authority before returning to law enforcement at the national archives. He was a life member and former Commissioner for Fairview Fire Dept, American Legion Post 1466 and VFW. Upon retiring he spent his days fishing with his wife. An avid outdoors man, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and in his younger years sky diving. A man of great honor which he bestowed upon his family and his many lifelong friends. Lou captivated all with his life stories, quick wit, sense of humor, and most of all he will be remembered for his heart of gold.

A Memorial Service will be held in Lou's honor Sunday, February 17, 2013, 12-3PM at the American Legion Post 1466 Legion Rd Poughkeepsie, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in Lou's memory to the American Legion 1466. For directions please call 845-486-8123. Arrangements are under the direction of Joseph J.
