Highland - Nicholas Salvatore Sciortino (1922 - 2013)
Nicholas S. Sciortino passed away peacefully on July 28, 2013 He had just turned 91.
He was born and raised on the family farm on Riverside Road in Highland NY.
Nick was the son of Salvatore and Anna Mancuso Sciortino. He attended Highland Schools.
On October 12, 1947 at St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church in Highland, he married Gloria Pampinella. Gloria predeceased him on February 6th 2011. They had been married 63 years.
He served his country during WWII
in the US Army as a Military Police Officer
and was stationed in New Guinea.
Nick retired from IBM in 1981 after 30 years of service. He also owned and operated Ulster Sanitation Service for 25 years. After his retirement he continued to work part time at Apple Greens Golf Course and Torsone's Funeral Home. He also worked as a part time police officer for the Highland Police Department. He was a member of the American Legion Post 193 in Highland.
Nick loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter, gardener, golfer, and wine maker. He enjoyed sharing the fruits and vegetables he grew in his garden with family and friends. Nick enjoyed wintering with his wife and son John at their Baffy Woods Condo in Cooper City Florida where he was a member of the Dirty Dozen Golf League.
Nick was a member of St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church in Highland where he served as an usher for over 25 years. He was a hard working man, devoted to his family, and proud of his Italian heritage. Nothing was more important to him, then his friends and family.
Nick is survived by 2 son's, John of Clintondale , and Robert and daughter in law Tracey Bell Sciortino of Highland, granddaughter Karley Sciortino, Brooklyn NY, grandson Robert Sciortino Jr. Highland, a brother Salvatore Sciortino of Coronado Island CA, sister in law Joan Taranta, Highland, sister in law Betty Sciortino and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother Thomas and his sister Antoinette.
The Family would like to thank his care givers at Golden Hill Nursing Center and Sharon Hospital for their kindness.

Calling hours will take place on Wednesday July 31st from 5-8pm at the Michael Torsone Memorial Funeral Home, Inc. 38 Main St. Highland, NY 12528.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday August 1st 9:30am at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church in Highland.
Burial will follow in Union Cemetery of Lloyd in Highland with military honors.
