Philip A. Russell, Jr.

Palm City, FL - Philip Alden Russell, Jr., a resident of Palm City, FL since 1987 and formerly of Valhalla, Scarsdale and Dedham, MA died on Monday, October 29, 2012 at the Martin Medical Center in Stuart, FL. He was 91.

Son of the late Philip and Ruth (Jackson) Russell, he was born in Rhode Island on April 11, 1921. Philip was a direct descendant of John Alden, historically known as the first person to step off the Mayflower upon its arrival at Plymouth Rock.

In his youth, Philip enjoyed sailing off the Massachusetts coast, especially during family trips to Cape Cod. He attended Yale University, where during his senior year he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during World War II. In 1985, he retired as a C.P.C.U. for Wausau Insurance Company in New York, where he spent many years as a casualty underwriter. He enjoyed golfing, and spent much time on the course after moving to Florida. In his later years, he learned to play organ and enjoyed that hobby as well.

On October 27, 1947, he married Dorothea A. Palace at the Church of St. Bernard in White Plains. He was predeceased by his wife on June 24, 2005.

Philip is survived by two daughters, Maureen Kangas of Fishkill and Nancy Ricci & her husband Kevin Haggerty of New Windsor; his grandchildren, Amy & Frank Manfredi of Lagrangeville, Adam & Bobbi Kangas of Wappingers Falls, Jeremy & Sandi Ricci of Olney, MD, Ryan Ricci of New York City, and Ashley & Jeff DeSombre of Newburgh; his great-grandchildren, Madison, Frankie, Kylie, Peyton, Adam, Emma, and Quinn; his sisters, Elizabeth Russell and Eleanor Ketcham; also many nieces, nephews, and many other loving relatives and friends.

In addition to his wife, he was also predeceased by his brother, Charles Russell.

Calling hours will be held from 10 am to 12 pm on Saturday, November 3rd at the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc., 1089 Main Street, Fishkill. A funeral service will begin at 12pm, followed by interment at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Greenburgh.
