Richard J. Ellis, 77, a Red Hook resident, passed away on Thursday, November 22, 2012 at The Thompson House in Rhinebeck.

Born on December 9, 1934, in Bronx, NY, he was the son of the late William and Anne (Haskins) Ellis. A 38 year Yonkers resident, Richard was always very proud of his Bronx heritage and was an avid NY Yankees fan.

He served in the United States Navy as a Naval Cryptologist from 1952 to1955 and was a member of the US Naval Crypto logic Veterans Association.

Richard married Veronica Tully on September 19, 1959 at Our Lady of Mercy Church in the Bronx and she survives at home in Red Hook.

For many years he worked as a communications engineer with Phibro Energy, Inc in Greenwich, CT, previously he also worked at Verizon and MCI in Manhattan.

Richard was a longtime member of St. Christopher's Church in Red Hook and was a life member of Charles Bajart, Jr. American Legion Post 1122 in Yonkers, NY.

He took great pride and joy in making doll houses for his grandchildren, and even donated his creations to be raffled off for charity. Richard was also an active volunteer at Ferncliff Nursing Home in Rhinebeck.

In addition to his loving wife of 53 years; Veronica Ellis of Red Hook, he is survived by his children and their spouses; Suzanne Ellis-Kelly and Philip Kelly of Red Hook, John and Diane Ellis of Montrose, NY, Thomas and Aey Ellis of Yonkers, NY, and Terence and Christine Ellis of Montrose, NY, a sister; Mary Loschl of Colonia, NJ, and a brother; Donald Ellis of Middletown, NJ.

He is also survived by his loving grandchildren for whom he adored; Ian Ellis, Kate and Daniel Kelly, Richard, Nicolas, Kristen, Jack, Braden, and Shannon Ellis, his daughter in law; Karen Ellis of Southbury, CT, along with several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his loving son, Richard Ellis, and grandson, Dylan Ellis-Jones, who are dearly missed and loved. He also was predeceased by two brothers; Robert and William Ellis, as well as his loved companion "Daisy"

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at St. Christopher's Church, Red Hook, NY. Burial will be at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Red Hook.

Friends may call at the Burnett & White Funeral Homes on Monday, November 26th, 2012 from 2 - 4 & 6-8 pm.
