Richard D. "Dick" Vandemark

Hyde Park - Richard D. VanDeMark, 88, a lifelong area resident, died on Saturday, April 26, 2014, at Vassar Bros. Medical Center, Poughkeepsie.

Born June 21, 1925 in Poughkeepsie, he was the son of the late John and Lena Gerbert VanDeMark.

He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean War. Dick took great pride in serving his country, and being a Marine was a very important part of his life.

A former member of the VFW, Dick held the position of Post Commander from 1962-1966 for the Hyde Park VFW Post #820, and was a life member of the Vail-Wolff VFW Post #170 in Poughkeepsie. He was a member of the China Marine Association, the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors, Inc., and was a former member of the NYS Fife and Drum Corps Association of the Southern District.

Dick enjoyed repairing antique clocks, woodworking, and restoring old furniture.

He worked for the National Park Service at the Roosevelt and Vanderbilt National Historic Sites until his retirement. Before working for the NPS, Richard worked for Florence Walsh Fashions, Hyde Park and Schatz Federal Bearing, Poughkeepsie.

Survivors include his daughter, Betty and husband, John Bolde Sr., of Hyde Park; daughter, Bonnie Perkins and partner, Fred Kommer, of Hyde Park; grandchildren, John Bolde Jr. and wife, Catherine, Ann Angell and husband, Craig, and Garth Perkins, all of Hyde Park; great grandchildren, John Bolde III, Nicole Bolde, and Thomas Angell; his former (second) wife and longtime friend, Bea VanDeMark of Hyde Park; brother, Donald VanDeMark; and several nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, Dick was predeceased by a great-granddaughter, Amanda Bolde of Hyde Park; brother, John VanDeMark of Raleigh, NC; half-sisters, Nellie Eaton of Troy, and Evelyn DePaolo of Staatsburg; half-brother, James VanDeMark, along with his former (first) wife and longtime friend, Olive "Rocky" Cullen of Hyde Park.

There are no calling hours.

A graveside service and burial with military honors will be 1pm on Friday, May 2, 2014 at Union Cemetery, Rte. 9G, Hyde Park. Rev. Arlene Dawber will officiate.
