Robert A. Matzek
Poughkeepsie - Robert A. Matzek, loving husband, father, grandfather, engineer, and friend passed away on July 18, 2013 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center after a long illness.
He was born on May 17, 1940 in Milwaukee, WI the son of Orval H. and Catherine D. Matzek. He grew up in Milwaukee, WI graduating from Pulaski High School in 1958. He attended the Milwaukee School of Engineering for a few years. In 1960, he joined the U.S. Navy
and was stationed at Whidbey Island, WA on the USS Constellation serving in the Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged in 1963. In 1965 he moved to NY to begin his career with IBM as a technician. He held numerous engineering positions and retired as a manager in 1995 after 30 years with IBM.
In 1985 he married the love of his life, Nancy M. (Gerrish) Matzek in Plainville, CT. He spent many years travelling throughout the eastern U.S. He was also an active volunteer giving many years to the U.S. Forest Service Lee Ranger District in George Washington National Forest in Virginia. He worked at the Massanutten Visitor Center and later worked behind the scenes as a computer specialist creating web sites and a searchable database for their CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) Museum Collection. He loved the great outdoors, camping, boating, golfing, sports, travelling, reading, computers and spending time with his wife.
Surviving him are his son Jeffrey Matzek of Poughkeepsie, NY, son-in-law Travis Sizemore of Poughkeepsie, NY, his daughter Sandy Matzek, daughter-in-law Theresa Matzek of Fort Wayne, IN, granddaughters Ana Matzek of Fort Wayne, IN and Cora Matzek and her significant other Jose Orellano of Fort Wayne, IN, grandson Brandon Matzek of Fort Wayne, IN, and great-grandson Bryan Orellano of Fort Wayne, IN, brother Chuck Matzek and his wife Pam of New Hartford, NY, brothers-in-law David Gerrish and his wife Judy of Denver, CO and Bill Gerrish and his significant other Lynn Wietzke of Bristol, CT. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Bob's life will be held on Monday July 22nd from 4 to 4:30pm at the Michael Torsone Memorial Funeral Home, Inc. 218 Mill St. Poughkeepsie, NY 12601. CASUAL ATTIRE IS WELCOME. Wheelchair entrance is located in the rear of funeral home on Vassar St.
A Memorial Service will immediately follow at 4:30pm led by Pastor Tim Riss of the Poughkeepsie United Methodist Church in Poughkeepsie, NY. Following the memorial service the celebration of Bob's life will continue between 5:15 and 6:00pm with music and pictures.
