Hyde Park - Sarah Elizabeth Brown, 86, a longtime Staatsburg and Hyde Park resident, died on Thursday, November 22, 2012 at the Hudson Valley Rehab. & Extensive Care Center in Highland.

Born September 10, 1926 in Staatsburg, she was the daughter of the late Sylvester and Mildred Elizabeth Terwilliger Banks. Sarah was one of seventeen children; she is survived by Richard Barkley and Kathy Aron.

She attended the former Staatsburg Union Free School, and was a former member of St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in Staatsburg.

Sarah's father instilled in her a great appreciation for nature. She taught her family to respect all living things: plants, flowers, birds, squirrels and any stray animal. She loved the outdoors and like her father, she loved fishing every chance she got. Sarah loved playing bingo and spending time with her friends and family.

On November 17, 1945 Sarah married the late Ernest T. Brown. They had four children: Sally A. Greene of Georgetown, DE; the late, Joseph E. Brown; Ernest R. & Pearl Brown of Lake Stevens, WA; and Nancy Lynn Doyle of West Shokan, NY.

Sarah was known as "Grandma Brown" to countless families due to her loving and caring nature. She is also survived by fourteen grandchildren: Scott & Laura Brown, Thomas & Tina Greene, April & Jay Meyers, Ernest 'Bummer' & Denika Brown Jr., Joseph & Heather Greene, Brook & Jimmy Schimmel, Christina & Louis Alphonse, Sarah & Travis Richter, Jessie & Vic Collazo, Vanessa Brown, Shane & Alexis Horan, Raymond & Jodie Brown, Stacy Coons, and Mandi Osterhoudt; along with sixteen great-grandchildren: Eric, Jarrick, Ashley, Victor, Joshua, Mary, Lauren, Anthony, Sean, Julia, Cheyenne, Anna, Alexis, Peyton, Loki, Derek, and Joseph; and all the other children and children's children she helped raise and influence. Sarah cared for all children as her own and she will still continue guarding them all.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 pm, both Monday, November 26th and Tuesday, November 27th at Sweet's Funeral Home, Rte. 9, Hyde Park.

Funeral Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at the Funeral Home. Rev. James A. Garisto will officiate.

Burial will follow in the family plot in Union Cemetery of Hyde Park.

Sarah Brown gave monthly donations to the children of St. Jude's and the family wishes to continue this in her honor. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to , PO Box 1000, Memphis, TN 38148 (www.stjude.org).
