Lewis Krevolin

Rhinebeck - Lewis Krevolin, 83, died at home surrounded by his children on Monday, January 30, 2017. Lewis was born June 21, 1933 in New Haven, Connecticut, the son of Ida Bolton (Bolchansky) and David Krevolin. Lewis was an artist from a young age, winning prizes for his paintings and ceramics in high school. He studied ceramics at Alfred University, where he met Jenny Goldberg. Lew and Jenny were married in 1956 and moved to the Hudson Valley in 1963. In addition to raising his children, he was an active advocate for craft and craftsmen. He was active with the American Craft Council, the Dutchess County Arts Council, the Mid-Hudson Arts and Science Center, and Eleanor Roosevelt Val-Kill. Lew was a young associate in the design studio of Russell Wright and received a Fulbright Fellowship to study in Helsinki, Finland in 1962. He was a founding partner of Krevolin-Constantine, a design firm specializing in home and commercial decoration, and taught Ceramics and Art History at Dutchess Community College. In 1974, he was the curator of Naked Clay, an exhibition of Pre-Columbian and contemporary ceramics from Central America at the Museum of the American Indian. After retiring from teaching in 1982, Lew started a company specializing in rebuilding historic houses and then a furniture company, Architrive, which he ran with his son Rudy and daughter in-law Debbie. In later years, he channeled his creativity into creating art quilts, which were exhibited in Rhinebeck in 2013. Lew was predeceased by Jenny and a daughter, Davida. Survivors include three children: Rudy Krevolin (Debbie), New Bern, North Carolina, Ellie Krevolin, Monroe, Connecticut, and Benjamin Krevolin (John Sare), New York City; Rudy's daughter, Jessica Krevolin DeCarlo, and her daughter, Sophia; Ellie's three sons: Jonathan Cairns, Timothy Cairns, and Dylan Cairns; and his siblings, Harriet Krevolin, Queens, New York, and Daniel Krevolin (Diane), New Haven, Connecticut.

Following a private graveside service, a memorial service was held on Thursday, February 2, 2017, noon, at Vassar College Alumni/ae House.

The family will hold visiting hours at home from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, February 3. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in Lew's memory be made either to Alfred University (http://www.alfred.edu/alumni/giving/alfred-fund.cfm) or the Dutchess County Arts Council/Arts Mid-Hudson (http://www.artsmidhudson.org/).
