POUGHKEEPSIE - Alexander "Mac" MacDonald passed away peacefully with loving family by his side on Tuesday December 3, 2012 at Vassar Brothers Hospital.
Mac was born December 18, 1930 in Detroit, MI. He was the eldest of 11 children to his parents Ronald and Ethel; both his parents and 6 siblings predeceased him.
He was a Corporal in the Air Force as an instructor until honorably discharged in 1949.
He was predeceased by his first wife Elizabeth "Betty." They had 5 children together who survive at home: daughter Tori and husband Damascus Purnell of Everett, WA and their 5 children; daughter Mary and husband Gordy Greenwaldt of Minneapolis, MN and their 5 children; daughter Louise MacDonald and husband Rick Nordby of Minneapolis, MN and their daughter; son Alisdair and wife Teresa MacDonald of Weslaco, TX and their 3 children; and son Bruce and wife Shelley MacDonald of Minneapolis MN and their daughter.
Mac was predeceased by his second wife Ellie whom he married in 1976. Ellie had 3 children who survive at home: son John and wife Nancy Schofield of Graham, NC; Linda Vecchi of Hyde Park, NY and Cindy Gardecki of Essex, VT along with 6 grandchildren and their spouses and 7 great-grandchildren.
Mac worked as a computer Programmer at IBM until his retirement in 1990.
Throughout his life, Mac enjoyed bowling, gardening, playing poker, Sudoku puzzles, and spending time at the Whitehouse in Fishkill. He also had a fond love of astronomy.
Mac made a generous gift by donating his body.
Mac had requested no formal services. Mac's family celebrated his life on Thursday in a private gathering.
