Barbara Lumb Obituary
Barbara Grubb Lumb

POUGHKEEPSIE - Barbara Grubb Lumb passed away at her home in Poughkeepsie on Sunday, May 12 after a 2 year battle with cancer.

She was born in Poughkeepsie on February 3, 1943 to Katherine Kirchner and Charles Grubb. Barbara was educated at The Emma Willard School and Connecticut College for Women. In 1964 she married Stephen Lumb, who survives at home. Also surviving are her two children, Katherine Lumb and her partner Robert Landry of New York City and David Lumb and his wife Nancy of Chevy Chase, MD and her sister Elizabeth Lumb and her husband Peter of Salt Point.

Barbara's history of employment and volunteerism shows a lifelong commitment to the City of Poughkeepsie and her greater community. Barbara was employed as the Director of Endowment for the United Way of Dutchess County, Fundraising Consultant for Northern Dutchess Hospital and Management Consultant for St. George's School. She was on the Boards of Vassar Brothers Hospital Women's Auxiliary, The Children's Home of Poughkeepsie, United Way of Dutchess County, Anderson School Board of Trustees and Anderson School Foundation, Bardavon 1869 Opera House, Junior League of Poughkeepsie (President), American Red Cross, Dutchess County Chapter (Board Chair), Dutchess County Task Force for Child Protection (Founder) and Dutchess Outreach (Board Chair).

She was a member of The Poughkeepsie Tennis Club and The Junior League of Poughkeepsie.

Barbara was a woman of many interests and passions, including travel, gardening, reading and cooking. Later in life she revealed a refined talent for flower arranging and filled her home with gorgeous bouquets. She was a dedicated athlete throughout her life, who excelled at swimming and tennis, and could be found in the gym nearly every day, running and weightlifting. She had a fierce intelligence, a fiery wit, an irrepressible sense of humor and an elegant sense of style. But her family and friends will also remember her for giving the best, most unique and fun parties in all of Dutchess County.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Dutchess County, 374 Violet Ave., Poughkeepsie 12601 or Dutchess Outreach, Inc., 29 N. Hamilton St. Poughkeepsie 12601.

As Barbara had requested, there will be no calling hours and a graveside service at The Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery will be for family members only.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Parmele, Auchmoody & Schoonmaker Funeral Home, 110 Fulton Ave., Poughkeepsie.
