Carolyn Barden

Poughkeepsie - Carolyn Helena Lee Barden

On March 2nd 2014 Carolyn Barden of Poughkeepsie died at Vassar Brothers Hospital after a long and valiant struggle with lung cancer. She was 78.

Born on September 14, 1935, she was the 13th of 16 children born on the farm to Everett and Julia Lee. She loved to tell stories of growing up with all her brothers and sisters on the farm, how her father took care of the livestock and the gardens while her mother kept busy in the kitchen preserving, cooking and baking. In the last weeks of her life the retelling of these stories was a source of great joy and happiness for her.

On September 15th 1956 she married Richard Barden who was her husband until his death in 1983. Since his childhood had been so rough he embraced Carolyn's large family and was welcomed in as one of them from day one. When he became ill, Carolyn was by his side every moment giving him excellent care and constant companionship.

As a member of Poughkeepsie United Methodist Church, she was a devoted volunteer for their store Second Hand Rose. A homemaker for most of her life, after her husbands' death she went to work at The Craftsmen in Poughkeepsie where she had a knack for helping customers find just the right gift or perfect piece for their home. Whether it was putting together an outfit or decorating a room, Carolyn was known for her impeccable style and good taste.

She is survived by her daughters Carol of Highland and Beth and her husband Tony of Lexington, Kentucky, her grandson Joshua Rinaldi of Poughkeepsie who affectionately named her 'Gran' when he was a little boy, and Granddaughters Megan and Molly Olsen of Highland. She is also survived by her brother Billy, and sisters Charlotte, Jean, Olive, Jane, Ann, Diana, Ellen and Sandra. She also had many nieces and nephews who loved 'Aunt Carolyn'.

In addition to her parents and husband she was predeceased by her brothers Howard, Allison, Delbert and George and her sisters Vivien and June.
