SARASOTA, FL - Donald B. Blackburn, 84, a 27 year resident of Sarasota, FL and formerly a longtime resident of Millbrook, NY, died peacefully Thursday, March 28, 2013 at the Pines of Sarasota following a brief illness.
Born January 13, 1929 in Coshocton, OH, he was the son of Raymond and Marie (Wilson) Blackburn. He honorably served in the United States Army and later graduated from Cornell University's Hotel School. On September 7, 1957, he married Jane Hollister in Redding Ridge, CT. He was predeceased by his wife on December 20, 1979.
Mr. Blackburn owned and operated the Blacksmith Shop, and later the Altamont Inn, both in Millbrook, NY, until his retirement in 1983. He will be fondly remembered as "Mr. B" by the many people he employed over the years, as well as numerous brides and grooms who had the good fortune to enjoy his expert hospitality at the wedding receptions he hosted.
He is survived by his son Jeffrey Blackburn and his wife Dawn, grandchildren Miles and Brett Blackburn, all of Clinton Corners, NY, his sister Kay Appleyard of Grosse Ile, MI, and two nieces. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his son Jonathan Blackburn and his sister Helen Blackburn.
There will be no calling hours. Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to The Audubon Society, c/o Sharon Audubon Center, 325 Cornwall Bridge Rd, Sharon, CT 06069.
