Hyde Park - Gail L. Curtis, age 62, passed away on September 16, 2013 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. She was born in Poughkeepsie on June 16, 1951, the daughter of Kenneth L. and Inez B. Shafer.
Gail was trained and employed for many years as a licensed beautician.
She graduated from F. D. Roosevelt High School in 1969.
In her youth, she participated for many years in the Pacers Drum Corps of Poughkeepsie. It was there that she met her husband, Jay A. Curtis.
They were married on August 21, 1971 in Poughkeepsie. Mr. Curtis survives at home.
She is also survived by her children, Jennifer and her husband, Rob, and Jay Jr. and his wife, Clare.
Family was always her number one priority. She spent the last fourteen years as Grammy to her beloved five grandchildren, Ryean-Marie, Jordyn-Alyse, and Peyten-Michele Duncan, and Quinn and Jack Curtis. Nothing brought her more joy than spending time with these children. She loved watching them participate in various activities. She cheered them on for countless soccer, little league, basketball, and hockey games as well as dance recitals, concerts, and plays. Before becoming a grandmother, her most prized title, she worked as a student supervisor at Haviland Middle School in Hyde Park.
She is survived by her mother, Inez B. Shafer; brothers, Robert, William, and Ralph Campbell, and sister, Ruth Marvin.
She was predeceased by her father and brother, Kenneth L. Shafer Jr.
The family would like to thank the entire staff of the 5th floor South Circle Oncology Unit at Vassar Brothers Medical Center for their exemplary care during her stay there.
In keeping with her family's wishes, cremation has taken place.
Calling hours are Thursday, September 19th from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 pm at Sweet's Funeral Home, Inc., Rte 9, Hyde Park.
A Funeral Service will be at 11 am, Friday, September 20th at the Funeral Home with Pastor Kregg Gabor officiating.
In lieu of flowers, Gail's family respectfully requests memorial donations be made to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, 1275 York Avenue, New York, NY 10065, or, the Dyson Center for Cancer Care, 45 Reade Place, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.
