Rhinebeck - Harry Gilbert, 97, passed away September 3, 2014 at his home in Rhinebeck. Born October 27, 1916 in Nashville, TN, he was the son of Isadore and Mollie (Levenson) Gilbert. On December 9, 1945 he married Beatrice Beimel who survives at home. Harry and Bea moved to Rhinebeck five years ago from Fresh Meadows, Queens.
He is also survived by his Children Adina Gilbert Longcore of Red Hook, NY; and Ilan David Gilbert of Yorktown, NY. He was predeceased by his daughter Judith Solinksy, and a grandson Samuel Ross Gilbert.
A Medic in WWII, he was a recipient of the Bronze Star. Harry attended National Farm School with a goal toward a life in farming; however upon the death of his father he, along with his brother Sol, took over his dry cleaning business and he later opened Harry's Smoke Shop which became an institution on Union Turnpike in Queens.
Harry is also survived by his devoted grandchildren Daniel, Doug, Kate, Joanna, Andy, Michelle, Leah, Casey and Ryan; great grandchildren Jacob, Eli, Sophia and Ella; beloved nephews and nieces, including his nephew Fred Gilbert whom he regarded as a son; sons-in-law Joe Longcore and Arnie Solinsky, and daughter-in-law Susan Gilbert.
A memorial service will be celebrated Sunday, September 7th, 11 AM , at the Dapson-Chestney Funeral Home, 51 W. Market St., Rhinebeck.
