John Frank Hafner
The Guest Book is expired.
Fishkill - John Frank Hafner, 85, of Fishkill, NY passed away on Monday, July 22, 2013 at home with his family by his side and without pain, after a brief illness.
John was born in Allentown, PA, the son of Frank and Katherine (Breitfeller) Hafner, originally from Austria. His first language was German and he learned to speak English outside of his home and in school. His youngest sister, Margaret Mezzone, survives and he was predeceased by 4 siblings, Pauline, Hilda, Angela and Walter.
John married the love of his life, Rita (Sapere) on September 8, 1951. They were happily married for 56 years when Rita passed on April 9th, 2007. Together they raised 4 children: Frank J. Hafner of Wappingers, NY, John P. (Jennifer) Hafner of Stanford, NY, Ralph J. (Laurie) Hafner of Wappingers Falls, NY and Veronica A. (Michael) Cirilli of Ramsey, NJ. John was a very proud father and often boasted about the accomplishments of his children.
John is also survived by a small army of grandchildren, Margaret, John, EmilyAnn, Timothy, John Peter ("JP"), Gretchen, Paul, Danielle, Nicole and Michael, all of whom miss him very much. In addition, he leaves behind a great-grandson, Braedyn.
John was a hardworking, self-made man. He served his country as a sergeant in the Army of Occupation in Japan from 1945 - 1949. After, he went on to become the proprietor of a butcher shop and he told everyone that he was an M.D. (meat dealer). He then became a school bus driver for the Wappingers Central School District and was affectionately known to his elementary school passengers as Mr. John. He finished his 35+ year career in the WCSD as the glazier for the entire district, a job he loved.
John was a very active participant in St. Mary's of Fishkill for many years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and belonged to various bowling leagues. He was also a Town of Fishkill Little League Coach during the league's formative years. After his retirement, he and Rita had the luxury of taking many cruises and enjoyed seeing different parts of the world.
John's favorite pastime in life was spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. Nothing in his heart was more important than his family. He kept everyone entertained with his great repertoire of one-liners. We will all miss him.
